Using Your Stove to Reduce Heating Cost’s Some Useful Hints

Light your stove in your normal way using wood, ensure you have a good flame, then reduce your air supply to make the stove burn slowly, don’t turn the air off, allow just enough air to burn, if you have a multifuel burner we would then suggest adding smokeless coal, this will burn for hours and give a great background heat, leave your internal doors open and let the heat circulate around your home, if your stove can give a rise of just a few degrees your gas heating bill will be drastically reduced.

Keeping your stove in overnight is recommended, ensure there is always a small amount of heat going into your property whilst you sleep, we sell a product called Lekto Night Briquettes, this is a slow burning Heatlog that just keeps your stove in overnight, it does not produce lots of heat, so it’s no good as a day burning Heatlog where you need heat, it’s designed for a small background heat especially good at keeping your stove alight at night, these are in the Special Offer section, a full description can be found there.

Do not burn cheap wood, pallet wood, trees that have been chopped down, or the local farmer has cheap wood, they will say it’s seasoned. Burning these types of woods will eventually block your chimney and in many cases will cause chimney fires which are very difficult to put out, the wood is generally slow burning with a poor heat output, burning these types of wood will cost you much more than you think, please stay away from cheap/free wood.

Kiln Dried Hardwood seems to cost more money:- However Kiln Dried Hardwood burns very, very hot, you will not need to burn so many logs, for instance:- you may need 8 normal logs to get your room hot, burning Kiln Dried Hardwood logs you will need 2 to 3 to get the same warmth, so you will burn less, hence you will save money, the biggest point to remember is that Kiln Dried Hardwood will keep your chimney/flue clean and does not cause a tar build up, not having to clean your flue so often, saving you more money.

 

An Understanding of Hardwoods

Oak, is the hardest and most dense of firewood that we sell, it is harder to light but burns longer as it’s so dense, it gives a great long burn with a very good heat output.

Ash, has a good density and is our bestselling firewood, it lights and burns well with a great heat output

Birch, is the next densest of hardwoods that we sell, it’s easier to light but burns slightly  faster, but gives a great heat output,

Alder, is our best-selling firewood, it’s the lowest price, it lights and burns very well and gives a good heat output, it does burn faster than all our other hardwoods, so you will burn slightly more, however, our customers are very happy with this wood.

 

 

 

Tanalised Timber – Questions answered:

How long does Tanalised softwood last?

Tanalising timber should mean that the wood is rot proof for a good number of years. In general, we say that the inside of the wood should be protected for about 40 years, and the outside for about 25 years. This is without any extra treatment, staining, or painting on your behalf, however, we do recommend applying a good quality wood preservative every 2 years, this will ensure the wood stays in good condition – we have buildings at our Wadebridge depot that were erected 25 years ago from Tanalised Timber and are in perfect condition – we have applied a wood treatment every 2 years, we have no rot at all, if you are putting the timber into the ground (Soil) we recommend using concrete as a back fill, around the post, but not under the post, this will allow any moisture inside the post to drain away,

Do you need to seal cut ends of pressure treated wood?

Yes, sealing cut ends is very important, as with any Treated Timber, use a good quality wood preservative, if we are installing wooden posts into the ground we soak them in preservative overnight, you don’t have to do this, but it does help preserve the timber.

Firstly, Part Seasoned wood can now only be sold in quantities of 2 cubic meters or more, this is not suitable for burning until it has been dried to a moisture content of 20% and below. Secondly, non-approved coals are being banned, we will only be able to supply you with fuels which are approved. As of 17th March 2021, we have sold the gas distribution side of our business to Flogas, however, we are still stocking the full range of LPG Gas bottles from Leisure Bottles to 47kg Propane’s, along with the full range of industrial gases from Air Products, at our site in Wadebridge for collection only.
